China's New Partnerships in Latin America and South Asia
As China's global influence continues apace, its economic, political and cultural influence on the nations in the regions of South Asia and Latin America expands in equal part.
The impact of China's low-cost manufactured goods on the local industries in Latin America has been significant, as has China's demand for raw materials.
Both Latin America and South Asia are centres of major economic growth and diverse cultural forms, and China's impact on these regions deserves close attention.
Researchers within the Centre explore the connections between Cuba, Mexico and China in terms of cultural exchange and economic cooperation.
Current projects being undertaken by researchers in the China Research Centre in this area include:
Contemporary China-Latin America relations
Researchers: Dr. Yingjie Guo and Dr. Adrian H. Hearn
This project is in collaboration with Jose Luis León-Manríquez (University of Guadalajara) and Victor López-Villafañe (Tecnológico de Monterrey) and examines the growing international influence and strength of one of Australia's most strategically important neighbours, the People's Republic of China. Emerging commercial and diplomatic alliances between China and Latin America pose economic and political challenges for Australia and other resource exporters. This research consolidates Australia's reputation as a leader in the field of China Studies by clarifying the nature of these challenges over the next five to ten years. The project will produce academic seminars in Sydney, Guadalajara, and Monterrey; the exchange of Australian and Mexican scholars, and joint publications in a field of study that bears direct relevance to the national interests of both countries. The team has just won an ARC Linkage International Award to support the project.
